The consolation of faerie comes from Tolkien's analysis of the parallels between ancient faerie stories and the death and resurrection of the Christian God.
Thus if the devil could convince people not to believe in fairy tales it would be easier to debunk the Resurrection.
The devil is not as dumb as he looks...actually he's even dumber because Jesus does not hate him but loves him. He just..will never understand.
