PROMO VIDEO: CHAIN REACTIONS: NOT JUST FOR CHEMISTRY ANYMORE

SAMPLE REGENTS CHEM OUTLINE

This is an example of a New York Regents Chemistry Syllabus, in case you are preparing for university or some similar examination.
There is no need to be intimidated!
All courses should cover the same basic concepts,
but knowing the history and the practial present day applications will make chemistry, like calculus or Chaucer, a "bird" course (watch the classic movie Sister Act for the reference.

WEEK ONE: ANCIENT CHEMISTS
Knowing a little Greek and a little Greek history is immensely helpful in understanding the roots of modern sciences.
Though they invented the idea of "element",
the ancient Greeks did not classify 92 elements, but only four: earth, air, fire, and water.
The individual credited with this philosophy is Empedocles of Agrigento, which is in Sicily.

What's more, the people talking about this were thought of as philosophers.
HERMES TRIMEGISTUS
PARMENIDES, PYTHAGORAS, DEMOCRITUS, HERACLITUS, ETC.

WEEK TWO: ALCHEMY, GOLD AND BIG PHARMA.
PARACELSUS was an alchemist who started talking about the three medicinal elements: MERCURY, SULFUR AND SALT.

WEEK THREE: PUT THE PEE IN PHOSPHORUS WITH HENNIG BRANDT.
Don't try this at home.

THE FOUR ANCIENT ELEMENTS
ALCHEMY AND ITS PRACTITIONERS
Anyone who's ever lit a fire or smoked a cigar might be glad to know that Robert Boyle "invented" matches--
well, that's an oversimplification, but it was a huge breakthrough, made possible by a Hamberg alchemist named Brandt
who discovered combustible properties of phosphorus, and apparently did not profit from it financially.

WEEK FOUR: ROBERT BOYLE
Boyle was a founder of an English Royal Society,
and was wealthy and generous enough to be prodigal with his discoveries, and share them around.

WEEK FIVE
HENRY CAVENDISH
Henry Cavendish was also a member of the Royal Society of London,
and discovered hydrogen while looking for an element which didnt exist, flogisten.
He called hydrogen "inflammable air"
