Archimedes may have been a student of Euclid and was charged with the defense of the ancient city-state of Syracuse.
Since siracusa is now a part of Sicily, you might conclude that he failed.
But in the process of defending the city he invented quite a lot of geometry, calculus and physics.
Incredibly, an Archimedes screw system is still in use in the salt mines of Mozia, Sicily as shown here:
